Description

Create large beautiful beads from any kind of fabric — even up-cycled clothing. Add wire, yarn, and seed beads for even more exciting treasures. The beads can become earrings, necklaces, pins, bracelets, or be used to embellish other fiber projects.

This is a fun way to use up scraps from knitting, quilting, or sewing and turn them into wearable art accessories.

Judy will provide samples and how-to instructions. Our first session will focus on bead-making; the second session (after a day between to make more beads) will focus on creating a wearable accessory from your beads.

Supply List

• About a dozen drinking straws or hollow coffee stir sticks (the diameter of the straw determines the thickness/size of the bead core.) I the prefer the straws, but both will work.
• Craft glue (like Elmer’s glue) or fabric glue (like Aileen’s)
• Any kind of fabric scraps (each bead needs a strip of fabric that is about 1” x 1-1/2”)
• Small spool of 26 or 28 gauge craft wire
• Bits of novelty yarns to embellish the beads
• Seed beads (any size) to embellish the wires
• Paper plates (one for beads, one for applying glue)
• Small paint brush for glue application

For the Project (second) session, recommended supplies include:
• For the Knotted Necklace: About 2 yards of silk “rat tail” any color
• For the Dangling Bead necklace: 1/2 ” Cotton cording (about a yard), a few balls of novelty yarn OR fabric cut into 1/2″ wide strips to wrap the cotton cord. Silk or novelty ribbon will also work (approx. 5 yds). Flat disc beads (about the diameter of the straw opening) OR large round beads that won’t slide into the straw opening. You will need 2 for each fabric bead that will go into your project, these go on each end of the bead.
