Draping a Pattern
An in-person class with Lily Chin
Nov 12, 9:00am-12:00pm PST
There are many ways to draft a pattern. Draping is one approach that is never talked about nor covered in knit design classes.
Lily will show you how to do it, on a live class volunteer!

In this demo/lecture-style class. Lily will use fabric to drape garments onto 2 student volunteers and show how to use the results as basis for knits. We can construct a garment on our body using commercial knit fabric, then can use the “mock up” as a pattern. By transposing the pieces onto grid-marked paper, we get the garment shapes; then we can plug in gauge and figure out where and how to simplify the knitting.
There are many advantages to learning this method: motifs may be previewed, stitch patterns “tried out,” and details tested. Most importantly, a personal and customized fit will be ensured.
Special skills or knowledge needed to take this class
Should have made garments before, maybe designed a few.
• Wear a tight camisole or leotard if you want to be draped for a pattern.
