This workshop is ideal for those who want to explore Fair Isle design but are hesitant about starting from scratch. In this class you will work with a classic Fair Isle tam pattern and pre-selected 8-color set so you won’t have to worry about choosing colors!

On December 5, Saturday morning, Janine will discuss the distinctive way that color is arranged in Fair Isle knitting. You will make a value swatch, and then use your colors to swatch several different arrangements of the large motif. Each colorway can produce options for knitting the motif, so you can continue exploring during the week before the next class.

On December 12, Saturday morning, you will explore designing the Corrugated rib and peerie bands and then you will swatch these elements.

Sunday morning, December 13, Janine will cover designing the tam’s wheel, then explain how the skills you’ve learned will translate into designing a traditional Fair Isle sweater or vest. At the end of class, you will have a solid foundation in Fair Isle design and a unique tam pattern (the kit has enough yarn to knit at least 3 different tams) and a good basic understanding for working with color value in other Fair Isle adventures.

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this class: Must have experience in stranded knitting and in reading knitting charts.

A kit is required for this class; the $50 kit fee will be added to your order. The kit will include 7 balls of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift yarn (25g/115yds) and 1 mini skein (21 yards). You will receive a follow up email to select the color way of your kit. The last image shows the 6 color ways available. There are limited quantities of each color way available, and they will be distributed on a first come first serve basis. NOTE: Due to time and shipping constraints, kits are not available to people living outside the United States.
