In the first session, we’ll explore all things mending. We’ll start with an overview of mending techniques, including darning and patching. Then we’ll cover a few simple ways to add both strength and beauty to fabric, including satin stitch and duplicate stitch. You can apply what you learn to many types of fabrics, not just handknits!
In the second session, we’ll install a short zipper on a knit swatch—perfectly and with NO SEWING! We’ll also discuss the details of choosing a zipper for a knit garment and installing it. Finally, you’ll have a chance to sew a ribbon facing on the back side of your zipper for a perfect finish.
In the last session, we’ll experiment with basic alterations to knits, such as shortening or lengthening the body or sleeves, adding ribbing, changing the collar, and even adding a pocket. We’ll wrap up the workshop by sharing our work and discussing ways to apply these techniques to our well-loved and beloved knits. All students are encouraged to bring knit items they’d like to work on: socks or sweaters with holes, sweaters with sleeves that are too long or short, or knits with stains.
Special skills or knowledge needed to take this workshop:
Students must be comfortable picking-up stitches and be familiar with basic seaming and finishing techniques.
