You will begin with Sashiko, create a focal square by stitching the traditional pine-bark design on dark indigo square. Inspired by the Shimacho (stripe books of woven samples used by Japanese weavers to sell their work), Pepper shows you how to frame the Sashiko with indigo patchwork. This patchwork and the pillow finishing can be done by hand or machine.
For the back of your envelope-style pillow, traditional elements of Sashiko stitching in white are combined with Boro patches in contemporary shot cottons which can be frayed at the edges to display thread color variations within the fabrics’ warp and weft.
You will learn to:
• Use a stencil to transfer Sashiko designs to fabric
• Stitch the Pine-bark design
• Add patches, Boro-style
• Surround the stitched square with patchwork
• Finish an envelope-style pillow (No zipper required)
A kit is required for this class; the $41 kit fee will be added to your order.
The kit will include:
1-1/2 yd. total of 7 different indigo prints plus smaller pieces of indigo homespun and three shades of shot cotton in blues for the body of the pillow; pack of assorted-size Sashiko needles; a ball of #8 white perle cotton; astencil to mark designs; a white chalk pencil; and extensive printed directions.
