A Virtual Class With Connie Peng

Feb 5, 2:00-4:00pm
Feb 6, 2:00-4:00pm and 5:00-7:00 pm CST

The artist M. C. Escher explored Tessellations, and we can as well. Learn how shapes interlock, how to make and develop them into tessellating patterns, and how to turn them into color charts for knitting, crochet, cross stitch, even beading.

Class sessions will be recorded and remain accessible online to registered students of the class for 14 days following the event.

Have you ever looked at M.C. Escher’s works and wondered how were they made? Connie will demystify the process of developing interlocking shapes and designs. You don’t have to be able to draw or paint. She uses an easy, hands-on approach to make shapes that fit together perfectly; it begins by creating your own template with scissors and paper. Then you learn how to create 3 types of tessellations — Translation, Reflection, and Rotations — and bring them to life with color. At this stage, the patterns may be used for appliqué, embroidery, stencils, or stamping fabric.

The next step is to translate the patterns into color charts and Connie shows you how. You’ll soon have custom charts suitable for knitting, crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch and many other applications.

Connie is a knitter, so the class project is knitting with your chart, but feel free to bring other supplies for your own exploration.
