If you sew, but are frustrated trying to find patterns you like (that also fit you well), you might want to try drafting your own. It’s not as hard as you think! In this workshop, you will learn how to take your own measurements and draft a pattern for a simple, classic A-line skirt, using your own unique body size and shape. We will also cover a few pocket and waistband options. Then you will cut it out and sew it up! You will learn how to sew darts, seams and seam finishes, hems, invisible zippers, and bias-tape facings, all of the elements you need to begin making your own clothes. Once you’ve made your first, you’ll see how many possibilities there are are for all sorts of modifications. You might never buy another skirt again!

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this workshop:
Students must have at least competent beginner sewing skills (i.e. a few simple projects under your belt) and be comfortable with their machine. Some homework will likely be necessary in order to complete the project.

Supply List for the pattern:
__Pad or roll of paper, at least 14′′ wide (can be newsprint, drawing paper, etc)
__Notebook + pen
__Scissors (for paper)
__ Ruler (ideally 2′′x18′′ clear plastic sewing ruler)
__Tape measure
__Clear tape
Optional: Hip Curve, French Curve or other curve tool

For the skirt:
__1.5-2 yards (depending on desired length/width of skirt) of medium-weight woven fabric, such as printed cotton, denim, etc.
__All-purpose thread to match
__1/2″ single fold bias tape to match (you can make your own, but it must be made before class)
__7″ (or longer) invisible zipper to match
__Regular zipper foot
__Invisible zipper foot (IMPORTANT: you will need an invisible zipper foot, which does not come with the machine. I recommend YKK brand if not the one made by your machine’s manufacturer)
__1.5-2 yards (depending on desired length/width of skirt) of muslin or other inexpensive light-to-medium weight fabric, for fit sample (can be used as a “wearable muslin”)
__Sewing Basics: Needles, Thread, Sharp scissors, Notebook, Pen or pencil with eraser, Tape measure, Seam ripper, Pins
