Description

Imagine the satisfaction of wearing beautiful, everyday clothing stitched by your own two hands without use of a sewing machine. That feeling is only a few techniques away. Learn and practice hand-sewing skills to make attractive, hard-wearing, stretchy, and comfortable jersey garments.

Rather than being project-based, this skill-building class focuses on stitches, seams, hems, and other finishes that are appropriate for clothes made in jersey, rib, ponte, and more. Learn the techniques to make great T-shirts, tank tops, leggings, underwear, bathing suits, sweatshirts, and beyond. Once these skills are in your hands, the sky’s the limit.

You’ll create a pile of technique samples to inform your future hand-sewn garments. Variations and experimentation will be encouraged. You will leave feeling prepared to create all sorts of knit garments by hand. They will be sturdy enough for your workouts, for your washing machine, for your everyday life, and still be beautiful enough for whatever special moments come your way.

Try hand sewing and start dreaming about a life lived in hand-sewn clothes.

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this workshop:
All are welcome in this class. However, some previous garment sewing experience will be helpful.

Supply list:
• 1 yard of midweight knit jersey, or the equivalent amount in various knit scraps. Rib, ponte, and other knit structures are okay, too, as long as the fabric is cut-and-sew knit and has relatively fine yarns. Imagine something suitable for a T-shirt or pair of leggings.
• Either cotton or poly-cotton thread will be best for this class
• Ballpoint hand-sewing needles
• Fabric marking tool (water-soluble marker, chalk, tailor’s wax, hera marker, etc.)
• Clear gridded ruler (or a regular ruler)
• Iron

Sewing Basics: Needles, Thread, Sharp scissors, Notebook, Pen or pencil with eraser, Tape measure, Seam ripper, Pins
Optional:
• A few sheets of blank paper, sharpened pencil, and paper scissors

Wonderful!

I very much enjoyed Hand Sewing Knits with Louisa Owen Sonstroem. It has been difficult to find hand sewing information. So glad Stitches is providing these classes. I have signed up for Hand Sewing Garments 101 for July. Louisa's is very knowledgeable and her calm and easy going teaching style made learning fun!

Great class!

The class was informative and interesting. Although I am primarily a knitter, the idea of hand sewing my own garments is intriguing, and I now have the tools to do it.
