Description

If you love to experiment with your knitting and create or modify patterns, this class is for you. This 2-week workshop will explore the potential of stacked stitches, the innovative technique behind the Fox Paws pattern. Stacks can add shaping, create 3D texture, replace short rows, and when combined with stripes, they create intricate motifs without unsightly strands on the wrong side of your projects. You’ll never need to manage more than one color at a time or worry about bobbins because stacked stitches bend rows of garter stitch into new shapes and patterns using only increases and decreases. The first 2 sessions will cover the basics of stacked stitches and will enable knitters of all levels and all speeds to try out the technique. We will practice with a swatch and become confident working repeating patterns. We will focus on mastering the increase and decrease stitches then learn several strategies for avoiding problems and fixing mistakes.

In the third session, students will create their own variations on the motif and begin to play with shaping. I’ll share some of my strategies for creating new stitch patterns, and show examples of different stitches and shaping. Students will then have a week to experiment on their own. When we reconvene for the last class, we will share our experiments with the group.

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this workshop:
Students should be comfortable with experimentation.
