Learning to hand sew this classic quilt block is an excellent introduction to hand stitching and has the advantage of being totally portable for today’s busy quilt-makers.
Class sessions will be recorded and remain accessible online to registered students of the class for 7 days following the event.

We might assume that the Log Cabin pattern, with its folksy name, is a classic American invention. But some quilt historians speculate that the pattern first appeared with emigrants from Northern England and the Isle of Man in the early 19th century. This pleated, quilt-as-you-go block is constructed (pieced) and quilted at the same time without batting. The blocks are then joined front-to-front and the backs’ foundation fabric whip-stitched together.
Pleated Log Cabin is a super addition to your quilting skills—you can sew a block at any time and in any place— and is a pattern you can teach to kids. This block’s casual sewing approach can ‘tame’ and re-use many fabrics — even those of different fibers. While working toward a class project (a small quilt using 16 blocks), this knowledge can also be expanded to plan/design your own larger quilt.
Special skills or knowledge needed to take this workshop:
It’s easy! Ideally, you know how to 1) thread a needle, 2) get on zoom, and 3) be willing to work along and participate in the class.
A kit is required for this class; the $48 kit fee will be added to your order.
The kit will include: How-to handouts (includes graphs and designing advice), needle, thread, backing yardage, 16 pre-cut block center and enough pre- cut strips to make four blocks. Note: If you want to do the larger project (after some design work), you can start to pull strips from your own stash and place them into the mix.
Available colorways shown in the last 4 images:
Green Tea: Assorted color strips in shades of green
Blue Jay: Assorted color strips in shades of blue
There are limited quantities of each color way available, and orders will be fulfilled on a first-come-first-served basis. Please contact email@example.com with your preference as soon as possible.
NOTE: Due to time and shipping constraints, kits are not available to people living outside the United States.
