Learn the basics of needleturn applique: straight lines, curves, points in leaves, circles, and stems. Irene teaches how to prepare shapes then glue-baste them onto the background using a lightbox. Yes, Irene has found the lightbox to be essential for the her process; it saves time by eliminating many steps in the prep that, “I used to do many years ago (in the dark ages!!)”

Irene’s prep process also gives you totally portable, ready-to-stitch blocks to pop in your sewing bag for on-the-go sewing. Anytime. Anywhere. A few minutes here, a few more there — and soon you have a block.

Although it doesn’t have to be, Matilda is a scrappy quilt — from the background fabrics to the flowers and vases — perfect for using a variety of small pieces of fabric. Each individual Matilda block measures 6-1/2 inch unfinished; rotate and put four blocks together for the 12-1/2 inch unfinished block that builds the Matilda Quilt. Stop with just those 4 blocks or build as big a quilt as you wish; with the scrappy approach, you don’t have to plan ahead.

This will be a fun class — talk and laughter is welcome and NO stressing. Needleturn applique can be turned into a precision process, but for Irene, the process must be fun. She says, “You do NOT have to be accurate; what you might perceive as mistakes and imperfections are all part of the charm of your quilts.”

After making one block Irene’s way, you’ll have all the skills you need to needleturn applique in any style.
