Description

Stacked stitches are an innovative approach to striped colorwork, best known as the technique behind the Fox Paws pattern. Stacks can add shaping, create 3D texture, and replace short rows. When combined with stripes, they create intricate motifs without unsightly strands on the wrong side of your projects. You will never need to manage more than one color at a time or worry about bobbins because stacked stitches bend rows of garter stitch into new shapes and patterns using only increases and decreases.

This workshop will enable knitters of all levels to try out the stacking technique in a swatch and become confident working patterns that incorporate it. In the first two sessions, we will master the increase and decrease stitches, practice strategies for avoiding problems and fixing mistakes, and learn about the different heights of stacked increases and decreases in preparation for more complex patterns. There is time to experiment with modifying the basic swatch instructions, discuss simple ways to add shaping to our swatches, and try out a few ideas. We’ll also discuss our color choices as a group and learn about using color in stripe patterns.

The Fox Paws Wrap is known for its iconic, interlocking stripe pattern and has the reputation of being a challenging but rewarding project. In the third session, we will build on our basic knowledge of stacked stitches and color theory and start a Fox Paws swatch in class. Working row by row, you will see how each stripe fits together; try different approaches for checking your work and fixing any problems that arise; and practice weaving-in yarns at the end of each stripe to save time during finishing.

By the next weekend, everyone will have at least one repeat of the Fox Paws pattern done. Together, we will take a look at each other’s work and learn how to fix any mistakes that have come up. In the final session we will work on our full projects or branch out into improvised motifs as we discuss modifying existing stacked stitch patterns and creating new ones. You will learn formulas for 3 essential motifs and how to scale them up or down to work with different stitch counts. Experimentation is encouraged!
