An in-person class with Cecelia Campochiaro
Mar 3, 9:00am-12:00pm & 2:00-5:00pm
Learn how to design a colorful cowl or shawl using marls with a new color-visualization approach called micro-swatching. These tiny swatches let you work strands together as one to see all the color combinations available to you and pre-visualize how they can be arranged in your work.

Description
Working with marls is as simple as holding strands together while knitting, but as with much in knitting, simplicity can beget complexity. This class will cover how marls work, the history of marling, color theory for marls, how to arrange color changes into different marl sequences, working with gradient sets, and how to plan projects using marls. One crucial planning technique students will learn is how to prototype a design with tiny swatches called microswatches.
Students will choose from simple sequence knitting designs for a cowl or a shawl using two-strand marls. Designing a specific piece with the hands-on swatching will not only result in a beautiful shawl, but it will also be a gateway into the wonderful world of marling.
To get the most out of this class, Cecelia recommends using Ito Kino (100% Silk Noil). The yarn is fine, at 464 yards on a 50-gram cone, so when 2 strands are combined to form the marl, the fabric feels more like a sport- or DK-weight knit with wonderful drape. Yarn will be provided for use in class, so students can pre-order a kit or get one after taking the class. Kits, called “Ella Improv Kits,” can be ordered at Uncommon Threads Yarn.
