Description

Learn how to knit a small circumference in the round without double pointed needles using a technique called Magic Loop Knitting. This is accomplished as if by magic on one long circular needle!

We will learn best practices for best results, and we will practice two applications. One is for a closed start, like the toe of a toe-up sock. The other is for an open start, like the cuff of a mitten, sleeve, or top-town sock. You will understand how to use your one needle to create any knitting in the round from the size of a finger on a glove to a hat, and everything in between.

Lorilee will include lots tips of both for ease of execution and for tidy-looking results focusing on proper stitch tension all the way around. The class handout includes patterns–a hat, mitts, and a pouch– so you can practice your skills right away.

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this class
Student must already have some experience knitting in the round at any circumference.

Supply List
• A hank of worsted weight yarn (100 grams). With this you will be able to make two projects in this handout- a pair of ribbed wrist warmers, and the “spare pocket” pattern. You will also be able to practice just the toe portion of a toe-up sock. If you want the matching set of hat and mitts, a second skein is needed. At minimum, just for learning in class, only 25 grams is needed.
• One 32-inch long circular needle (24-inches is NOT long enough). Choose a needle with straight tips. Varieties that have a bend or “elbow” in the needle won’t work well. Choose a needle with a flexible, yet sturdy cable. Brands like ChiaGoo and Skacel Addi are appropriate. Having a spare needle similar will be helpful if you want to set one sample aside while we move ahead. For the projects in the handout, choose a size you would normally use for working the ribbing of a worsted weight sweater, US 4 – 6 (3.5-4.0 mm). Gauge is not critical for class learning.

No pre-class work required.

This class was great! Lori was well-prepared, thoughtfully answered questions and always seemed open to the needs of us as students. I was able to practice the technique after class due to the clear instructions and guidance she provided. I am glad the class was 4 hours rather than 2 as we really needed that time. She also gave us instructions on another cast on method and hints to use what we had learned. Overall, definitely worth the time spent!

Great class!

This wonderful class broadened my knitting horizons. Many uses for the magic loop were sampled during the class. For those of us who find double pointed needles finicky, this class was a godsend.
