Learn the Knit One Below technique to create the column stitch — vertical stripes in 2 colors. Harry will show suitable cast-ons and bind- offs that enhance this expanded, supple fabric

Knitting in the stitch below can produce a variety of effects, including creating stunning vertical stripes in a thick, soft, supple fabric while working with only one color per row or round. In this class, we cover and practice the K1B technique to create the column stitch in both flat and knit-in the-round fabrics. The column stitch is vertical stripes created by alternating the two color in rows.

Experiment with variegated colors and textured yarns for added interest and pizzazz. Suitable cast-ons and bind-offs will be taught, as well as tips for maintaining and creating attractive edges.

Special skills or knowledge needed to take this class:
Participants must be able to accomplish basic long-tail cast-on and work knit, purl, K2 tog, and SSK without assistance.

Supply List
• Two balls (25 grams each) of worsted-weight wool yarn in contrasting colors. One may be variegated if desired, with the contrasting color being totally different from any colors in the variegated yarn
• For either the scarf or hat projects, two balls worsted weight yarn (100 grams each in contrasting colors)
• DPNs US 6/4mm (7” or 8” best) or 16” circular to practice technique in class
(If you are making the hat, also needed is US 5 size, 16” circular needles)
• Bring another ball of worsted-weight yarn (10 grams)
• US 6/4mm needles to practice cast-ons
• Also US 4/3.5mm (US 3 or 5/3.25 or 3.75mm can be substituted for US 4).
• Knitting Basics: Sharp scissors, Notebook, Pen or pencil with eraser, Stitch markers, Tapestry needles (large and small), Tape measure, Small calculator, Needles and crochet hooks of various sizes
Optional: A fingering-weight yarn, a textured yarn/novelty yarn, a flat yarn, a yarn with metallic element.
